James Ian Kirkland (born August 24, 1954) is an American paleontologist and geologist. He has worked with dinosaur remains from the south west United States of America and Mexico 〔Kirkland at al. 2001, p. ?〕〔Kirkland et al. 2006, p. ?〕〔Gates et al. 2007, p. ?〕 and has been responsible for discovering new and important genera. For the past decade he has been the Utah State Paleontologist for Utah Geological Survey.
